Unfortunately, even in the advanced year of 2015 there are still stigmas and stereotypes around counseling, or seeing a therapist. However, attending therapy isn’t reserved for those with a “diagnosis.” On both a personal and professional level, I can attest to therapy as proven useful for those working on adjusting to or preparing for life transitions, changes in relationships, coping with grief or loss, managing stress, and even for improving overall well-being. There is no right or wrong reason to seek out a non-judgmental, unbiased, objective, third party with whom one can discuss their experiences, reflect on thoughts or feelings, and do so within a contained, safe space. On the most basic level that is what therapy is.
As a practicing Marriage and Family Therapist it is an ongoing frustration, as well as challenge, to see that not enough importance is placed on mental health. An individual’s mental and emotional health is just as important as their physical health due to the impact one has on the other, and vice versa. For example, there’s no question about going to a medical doctor for a broken arm. Then why should there be so much question and hesitation around seeing a trained specialist for a broken family system, a broken relationship, or a broken soul? Medical research has indicated the powerful link within the mind-body connection in which one’s emotional well-being strongly correlates with physical well-being. The two significantly relate to and impact one another. So, why not do something that supports all aspects of your health?
As previously stated, there’s no right or wrong reason for trying therapy. Despite the still occurring stigma, many brave people have embraced talk therapy as a supportive resource for creating change in their lives. In doing so they are able to improve self-awareness, identify healthy verses unhealthy coping skills, and become empowered to do things differently from a place of hope and positivity. There’s no need to wait for a “good enough” reason. If you’re curious and open to learning more I encourage you to find out for yourself.
